The British Druze Society:

The idea of the British Druze Society was established on January 21st 1983, during the Lebanese Civil War by Sulayman Abu Hamzy, Dr Shibli Abi-Chahine, Mohammad Sultan, Ayad Abou-Chakra and Ghassan Arbid who concluded that a charitable society needs to be founded. They were joined by Ms Noura Alamuddin, Mr Shawky Makarem, and Mr Nadim Al-Halabi as founder members of the Society.

The Charity Commission was contacted an an application form was filled in the name of “The British Druze Society” with eight registered founder members.

The first Trustees/Officers:

  • Mr Nadim Al-Halabi, as Hon. President
  • Mr Mohammad Sultan, as Hon. Chairman
  • Mr Ayad Abou-Chakra, as Hon. Secretary General
  • Mr Ghassan Arbid, as Hon. Treasurer
  • Mr Shawky Makarem, as Relief Officer
  • Ms Noura Alamuddin, as Public Relations Officer.

The BDS received its official registration as a British Charity in August 1983 and the first MC elections were held at The Sheraton Park Tower Hotel.

The first elected Management Committee members:

  • Noura Alamuddin, as Hon. President
  • Ayad Abou-Chakra, as Hon. Chairman
  • Jamal Abi-Chahine, as Hon. Secretary General
  • Ghazi Jumblatt, as Hon. Treasurer
  • Mr Bassam Abou-Kamel, Mr Bahij Al-Andari, Mr Ghassan Assaf and Mr Ramzi Makarem, as members.
